Insurance covering Natural Disasters and Volcanic Ash
Direct Travel stood out from the crowd at the start of the volcanic ash issues in 2010. They covered policy holders on the basis the incident was weather related, but since that time they have introduced a new 'bolt on' policy which has changed the position.

What Volcanic Ash Cloud cover is provided by Direct Travel?
Direct Travel Insurance now require policyholder to buy an additional bolt on to their standard policy if they wish to be covered for cancellation, curtailment or additional costs relating to an enforced stay away as a result of a natural disaster.
They cover up to £6,000 for trip cancellation and up to £2,000 if you are stranded abroad. There is also cover if you are stranded on an international connection, for expenses when stuck in the UK and insurance to cover additional expenses to reach your intended destination if you do not wish to cancel your holiday. Finally incidentals such as additional parking and pet boarding are insured.
Do note that this bolt on policy will not cover costs incurred as a result of strike action, and that if the natural disaster has already occured the policy has to be bought (or holiday booked withever is later) at least seven days before your holiday starts) or the benefits are reduced by 75%.
