Budget rent cars throughout the world, offering a range of insurance dependant on location, age of the driver and the car rented.
Some of their excesses are eyewatering though, as are the costs of their excess protection plans.
Their main additional insurance in Europe, and elsewhere where Collision Damage Waiver, Theft Protection and Third Party Liability insurance are packaged in, is:
Super Collision Damage Waiver (SCDW) and Theft Protection
In case of damage, the driver can reduce the excess charge that would be charged in the case of an accident or theft of the vehicle by purchasing Super CDW and TP. Taking Rome as a sample destination the excess in the case of damage to your rented car vary, dependent on car size, from €1,210 to €2,420. In the case of theft the excess would be between €2299 and €3388. The costs of excess insurance would be a minimum of €21.78 up to a maximum of €30.25 (although a monthly rate for these policies is slightly cheaper, at between €326.70 and €453.75 per month) - this compares to a figure of less than £2 if using the moneymaxim car hire insurance service.
Over a two week holiday the total cost of this insurance bought from Budget would be around £300, compared with an independent supplier two weeks cover could cost less than £30, whilst annual car hire insurance policies are available for less than £40.
Additionally the Budget policy will not cover wheels, tyres, underbody of the car or the windows, whereas the independent policies do.
