Car Hire Annual Excess policies are taken to cover incidents that occur during a car rental. As a minimum the policies cover:
- Damage Excess to the vehicle
- Theft Excess
- Window, wheel, underbody and tyre damage
In addition some policies offer baggage cover, travel delay, restitution, lock out cover, misfuelling cover, lost / stolen key cover and more - either as part of the policy or as an optional extra.
A number of policies now also include full recovery vehicle cover as some car hire companies are now declining to pay for recovery vehicle call outs for non insured or breakdown related incidents. These include flat batteries, tyre problems, broken windscreens and running out of fuel.
The total amount that can be claimed under the excess element of the policy varies from a minimum of £2,000 per incident and £3,000 in total over a policy year up to around £50,000. it is worth considering a higher limit if renting in Italy, Portugal, Ireland or Australia where already excesses are at or close to the £2,000 level.
This is a reimbursement insurance which covers the policyholder rather than the hired vehicle. The hirer can decline the car rental company's excess cover (Super Cover / Damage Excess Waiver) at the counter. If there is any damage to the rental vehicle, their card will be charged and a claim for reimbursement can be on the policy. The policy can therefore be used with all car rental companies and at all car rental locations.
