This insurance actually covers the person hiring the car (and those named on both the policy and the car hire agreement), rather than the car - so these policies will cover almost any normal family car, 4x4 or MPV you might rent - although policies do exclude very expensive vehicles.
The only exceptions tend to be exotic and vintage cars, vehicles over 20 years old, cars that have not been in production for some time, those with more than 9 seats or not registered for road use. Also caravans, motor bikes, trailers, commercial vehicles, trucks, off-road vehicles, recreational vehicles (RVs) and passenger vans are excluded.
Camper Vans, RVs and Motor Homes can be covered on daily policies accessed via our motorhome insurance homepage.
Vans can be also be covered on daily policies available through our van hire insurance homepage.
Also be aware that policies have a limit on cover - between £2,000 and £4,000 for a single incident, a bit higher over the course of a year. If you are looking to rent a high value vehicle just check the excess - very occasionally they may be in excess of the policy limits.
Providing the overall value of the car is within the policy boundaries in that case you would be then bearing the risk for the 'gap'. Alternatively you could then decide to go for a policy with a higher limit on either car value, excess limit or both. These are all detailed on the moneymaxim car hire insurance service.
