The Jubilee bank holiday weekend is a break many Brits are looking forward to. With hotel prices rising by up to 223% over this period, however, it is important to save as much as possible on other holiday costs such as finding cheap car rental hire.
Finding low-cost hotels for the Jubilee bank holiday weekend will be a struggle for many families. New research carried out by Santander has found that hotel bookings over this period will come with increased premiums.
Those spending their holidays in London will face a price increase of 54% (£1,043 more on average) in comparison to any other weekend of the year. This premium will be even higher in luxury five-star hotels, which will experience an 81% price rise (£1,887 more). In contrast, three-star hotels will increase by a smaller figure of 26% (£199 more).
These prices are based on average booking prices for two adults and two children for four nights.
"Demand for hotel rooms in London is likely to be fierce over the Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend, so we'd expect to see inflated room rates, but the premiums our research has uncovered will price many families out of the Capital altogether,” explained Andy Smith from Santander.
Families hoping to pay less during their Jubilee bank holiday could travel to other destinations such as Edinburgh or Manchester, where prices are expected to rise by 28% and 8% respectively.
Another option is travelling abroad for the long weekend. If you decide to do so, remember that a good way of keeping costs down is organising your own transportation. Car rental hire works out cheaper than paying for public transport, and it is also much more convenient. This might also work for those spending their bank holiday in the UK.
"Families hoping to book a hotel stay around the 6th June can still avoid some of the steeper premiums by shopping around for the best deal or if they have transportation, considering a location that is slightly less central,” added Smith.
