Pedestrian inattention could be the cause of 17 collisions a day and it is thought iPods and other mobile gadgets are partly to blame. Compare iPod insurance to protect it from damage when you are on the go.
According to AA Insurance there has been a 5% increase in ‘distraction' accidents over the last year, with pedestrian's lack of attention accounting for 26,887 pedestrian casualties last year.
More than half of AA Insurance claims involved causes such as a man on his phone stepping onto the road not looking, she looked the wrong way, and he walked into the side of the car. Almost 2% of these accidents ended with the driver swerving to avoid a pedestrian and hitting something else instead.
"Whether on two feet, two wheels or four, too many people are suffering from so-called ‘iPod oblivion'," said AA President Edmund King.
"When on the move our brains have much to take in and using technological gadgets means that our brains can't always concentrate on so many things at once."
As technology evolves to be used on the move, more and more people are doing so but consumers are warned that this can lead to unintentional blindness or divided attention.
