Should I buy my excess insurance before I book my car hire?

Does it matter if I buy excess insurance after I have hired my car?

It is usually better to wait until after you have booked your rental car to purchase excess insurance as you will then have a better understanding of which kind of top up car hire insurance you need.

Most car hires, particularly in Europe, come with the main insurances of CDW, Theft Cover and Third Party in place and therefore a vehicle hire excess policy will suffice to cover not only the excess but other areas such as the tyres, wheels, mirrors, roof and underbody of the vehicle.

However, there are some car hire companies (and this can happen more often when hiring in North America) where you can find that not all the main insurances are included. If this is the case you may need additional insurance such as a Collision Damage Waiver or Supplementary Liability Cover. These are also available through MoneyMaxim.

You may also discover that there is additional insurance you need depending on your travel plans and what can be covered by your chosen rental company. For example, if you plan to travel on a ferry then your insurance that comes with your hire may not cover you. Provided you have permission from your rental company to take the car on the ferry you could opt for a CDW policy through MoneyMaxim to fill the gap..

Knowing what insurance is included in your rental and therefore what additional cover you need is key to choosing the correct car hire excess insurance policy to fit with your needs.

You must purchase excess insurance before you sign to collect your vehicle and pick up the keys.

If you have an annual car hire excess insurance policy in place, you can cover as many car hires as you want during the year as long as each hire is no longer than the maximum trip length stated on your policy.

This does mean that on subsequent rentals you will have your excess insurance in place before you book your car hire. Please do make sure, however, that your annual policy is adequate for each rental. If you have a European annual policy but then need to hire in the USA you will need to purchase a separate car hire insurance to cover this trip. When there is a possibility that during the year you may choose to travel outside of Europe then opting for an annual worldwide policy may be a better way forward.
