Car hire normally comes complete with collision damage and theft waivers and third party insurance cover. Damage waivers usually have excesses which, although by European standards aren't particularly high (€600 or so on a modest compact car is fairly typical) are still enough to make car hire excess insurance well worth considering. Especially as the car hire excess policies will cover vulnerable parts of the car excluded from the cdw policy. Many also offer additional cover such as misfuelling, lost keys, towing costs or personal injury cover.
