An international driving permit is recommended for hiring a car in Nicaragua.
Insurances are often optional and sadly, complicated so read the terms carefully and compare car hire insurance costs and coverage with the MoneyMaxim car hire insurance comparison service in order to get the best blend of covers.
Sometimes, you may be better to accept the cover supplied by the rental firm, not so much for the cover offered but to avoid the penalties for not taking it. For example: National offers a loss/damage waiver for $35 a day for a compact car. Basic third party insurance in included in this cover. If you decline the loss damage waiver then you have to purchase of their basic third party liability compulsory - at $12.99 per day. So you might as well accept the loss damage waiver in the first place if renting from National. This comes with a hefty $5000 excess so you may want to purchase independent car hire insurance to cover that along with protect you from addition charges for damage to windscreens, tyres and underside of the vehicle which are always excluded.
Third party insurance provision is similarly patchy. The third party cover provided under the National policy above is very limited for personal injury and for all personal injury and may also carry an excess on any claim.
With Alamo, Primary Liability Insurance is a compulsory extra from $12.99 USD per day but has similarly low limits at $5,000 for personal injury up to $20,000 for all third party damage.
You can purchase Supplementary Liability Insurance (SLI) to top up this cover to $1 million through our comparison service. Do note that SLI policies bought though our site are designed to "top up" existing basic cover rather than be the whole of the third party cover.
