Compare Car Warranty Policies

We have seen a rise in popularity of car warranty schemes, particularly in the current economic climate when people are keeping their cars for longer but still want to protect themselves against the large unexpected bills which can arise with slightly older vehicles.

Car Warranty schemes did receive a fair amount of bad press a few years ago but, following the adoption of industry standards a couple of years ago, there is a better reputation developing across the industry.

When you compare car warranty schemes do consider the following:

• Is wear and tear cover provided? If so, it can help avoid debates with the insurers as to whether an issue is wear and tear or a breakdown.
• Are there restrictions on where you have to service your car?
• What is the maximum claim? Are there limits on labour charges?
• Is breakdown cover included? If so, it could save on paying for the AA or RAC.
• If you use your car abroad are you covered?
• What are the excess levels?

Our recommendation when comparing car warranties is to download the policy documents from a couple of suppliers and read them carefully - you will then get a good idea of the features that are important to you, what is covered and what is not.

As you compare car warranty policy documents it is as important to understand what isn't covered as what is.

Doing this will ensure you end up with the type of car warranty policy that will cover you when you expect it to.
