Five Fun Facts about the Canary Islands

- The yellow birds were named after the islands, not the other way around! Monk seals also known as sea dogs used to live on the islands so they become known as, in Latin, Canariae Insulae or ‘Island of the Dogs’.

- El Hierro is close to becoming the first island in the world to be totally self-sufficient. This has been achieved thanks to its renewable energy scheme and efforts to encourage ecological systems in farming and in its tourist industry.

- All the Canary Islands were formed from volcanic eruptions with Mount Teide on Tenerife on the podium as the third tallest volcano in the world. The volcanic crater at El Golfo on Lanzarote with its distinctive green colour is also a spectacular sight.

- La Gomera has its own unique language. The island has many wide valleys so the whistling language, Silbo Gomero, was developed to make communicating across the landscape easier for the local people.

- Due to the islands being volcanic, a large number of their popular beaches are actually man-made. Many animal species only exist on the islands as a result of human interference too. There were no black rats before humans arrived but their introduction did lead to the extinction of the islands’ giant rat species so maybe that is no bad thing!
