Pet insurance is not only useful for when your dog or cat requires treatment, but can include other benefits such as a 24 hour advice line if you are unsure how to respond to your animal's illness in the dead of night.

Some insurers can advice animal lovers if their pet is in need of emergency medical treatment, or if they will survive until morning.

When comparing different pet insurance policies it is urged that pet owners look at what each provides in detail, as they differ considerably from one another.

Policies will differ depending on the type of pet you have, and also within that group as certain breeds of dogs for example cost more to insure due to them being more likely to catch certain illnesses.

If you have more than one pet it is advised you put them all on one policy as you may be awarded a discount for doing so.
