Virgin Media has announced it will be launching its ultrafast 1Mb broadband service for the nation's 17.3 million broadband users.
If you require faster broadband or are not happy with the service you are getting with your current provider compare broadband deals online.
Research by uSwitch.com showed that while six million homes pay for an 8Mb broadband service only two million actually receive it.
As 14 million households have broadband installed for managing finances online this equates to 82 percent of the population classed as users, internet is a modern day essential.
The Virgin service will cost £35 as part of a bundle or £45 as a standalone product with consumers able to sign up from today.
"The speed may seem excessive now, but Virgin Media are future proofing their network for years to come, as well as catering for households using multiple internet-enable devices," said Ernest Doku, uSwitch.com's communications expert.
"The amount of time Britons spend online will only continue to increase, and suppliers must ensure that products are priced in a way that allows access for all."
A report by Ofcom showed the UK's broadband speeds have increased by over 25 percent over the past year from 4.1 Mbits to 5.2 Mbits.
The organisation also this month announced its decision to promote competition and investment in super-fast broadband services for UK consumers.
As part of this initiative Ofcom will allow competitors to access a dedicated virtual link over new lines so other companies can have control over them and provide broadband to their own customers.
Compare Broadband Providers
It is important to compare broadband providers constantly as due to the internet still being a relatively new life essential it is a relatively untapped industry.
However, as more competition comes onto the market prices are set to reduce and this article also showed speeds will increase.
If your household does not require fast speeds or does not have multiple computers do not go for a deal where you will not need the extra
