FAQ Section > Car Hire Insurance FAQs > Car Hire Insurance - Theft Cover

What is covered by the Theft insurance included in the car rental price?

The price of the car hire can include theft waiver as a separate cover.

Unlike a normal car insurance policy, vehicles are not covered for both accident and theft under the same policy. Theft Waivers cover the theft of your hire car, or damage resulting from a theft, but almost always an excess will be applied meaning the first part of any claim remains the responsibility of the person hiring the car.

This often means the car hire firms seek separate excess insurance for Theft Protection and Damage Waiver. Theft excesses can be even larger than Damage excesses. We have seen family cars with theft excesses of £3,000 in Italy recently (October 2018).

Independent Car Hire Excess Insurance policies such as those available through our comparison service cover the excesses applicable on both the Collision Damage Waiver and the Theft Protection elements of your car rental- normally at a fraction of the cost of car hire firms' policies.
