Avis is reasonable without being outstanding when it comes to the clarity of information on their website. In particular it takes a lot of delving to find out what excess you are liable for, and the costs of protecting this is rarely spelt out.
Where it is possible to identify them (for UK rentals only) however excess waiver policies such as Avis Vehicle Cover costs between £25 and £32 per day (maximum charge 10 days) depending on vehicle size - significantly more than excess policies available through (compare at MoneyMaxim car hire excess insurance comparison).
Why use Avis?
You know you will get a new or nearly new car, that the office will be well located, and that you have a brand that has been around for decades which does provide some reassurance.
The company charge no credit card fees - meaning you can get the extra protection booking which a credit card provides at no extra cost.
Where using Avis has both advantages and disadvantages
Discounts for prepayment - Avis do give a discount for prepaid rentals - which is good news. Prepaid agreements can normally be cancelled as long as it's more than 24 hours before you were due to collect your car, subject to a fee. You can also amend your booking more than 24 hours ahead of pickup, although no refund will be paid if the amended cost is lower (and you have to pay the extra if it's higher).
Pay on collection arrangements do give more flexibility but cost slightly more.
