Manchester United player Paul Scholes lost his 4×4 Chevrolet Estate to opportunistic car thieves as he left the engine running in the car to defrost the windows yesterday morning.
Greater Manchester Police had warned the public of the risks of leaving vehicles unattended while defrosting under Operation Frosty.
Unless there are different rules for footballers, it seems very unlikely that his insurers would pay out on a claim. The car wasn't actually his, but loaned to him as part of a sponsorship deal with the club. It would be interesting to know if Chevrolet will ask Mr Scholes to pay for the car. The final insult would be if they'll value it higher than normal due to it having been owned by a celebrity!
So however tempting, don't leave your car outside your house with the engine running to warm it up while you wait indoors. Insurers regard it as negligent and will not pay out. Rightly so, as if they did, everyone's premiums would be higher.
