Music Lovers Urged to Check Gadget Insurance

If you have spent a lot of money on downloaded information it may be worth taking out separate gadget insurance for your electrical equipment.

Consumers are at risk of losing hundreds of pounds worth of digital music if their home insurance policy does not cover it, a new study reveals.

If you download a lot of music and would lose a considerable amount of money if you lost it through a virus or burglary you should consider getting gadget insurance.

The study by Which? showed a third of leading home insurers' standard policies do not offer any form of digital information cover.

Over 100 million tracks are downloaded by UK music lovers each year, worth hundreds of pounds.

"It's surprising that, at a time when the popularity of digital downloads is soaring, insurers aren't offering music lovers the protection they need,” said Peter Vicary Smith, Which? chief executive.

"People who buy a lot of digital music should double check their home insurance policy to make sure downloads are covered.”

Budget and Esure do not cover downloads on their standard policy, while Direct Line and Privilege offer up to £1,000 in digital information cover.

Some download providers such as HMV Digital, Play.com and Tesco Entertainment allow customers to re-download lost tracks so consumers do not have to rely on their insurance. iTunes however only allows customers to download a track once.
