**Newly qualified drivers are at risk of spending around £2,000 more to get insured on a small hatch back as the cost of car insurance continues to rise. **
New research by a price comparison website found that a new driver looking to be insured on a Ford KA last year could expect to pay just under £900, however, fast forward to June 2011 and the best quote around for a new driver is at £1,900.
The research was based on a driver holding a provisional licence or having passed their test in the last 12 months.
A list of the ten most popular cars for newly drivers has been complied and a Fiat 500 POP takes the top spot with the best premium rate of £1,786.60 out of 500 quotes.
Ford cars prove to be popular with three different models all within the top ten most favourable cars for new rivers, the Ford KA 2 & KA3 were second and third place on the list.
The car trends of choice have changed since June 2010 when a Vauxhall Corsa was the most popular car. The only car out of the top ten that still features on the 2011 list is the Ford KA. Mercedes and Honda car manufactures were the new entries on the list.
Gareth Kloet from confused.com said that cheap car insurance is hard to come by unless you shop around for the best deal.
"The popularity of these cars may have been led by their use by many driving instructors, and also by the relatively cheap insurance cost compared to other small cars,” he said.
"Getting reasonably-priced car insurance can be a nightmare for younger drivers. With rising premiums it's more important to compare prices now than ever before.”
