Book early to find the car hire to suit you

The earlier you book the more likely it is that you will be able to hire the car that fits your needs - this is particularly important if you are looking for a larger car such as a 7-seater. Buy insurance before you go and beat the prices at the car hire desk

Find ways of reducing the cost of your car hire

• Off airport locations are often able to offer lower priced car hire as there are no airport fees. The queues are often shorter too!

• Have you considered a limited mileage option? You may be worried that it will be too restrictive but limits can be fairly generous and these packages are often less expensive. Work out roughly how much driving you will be doing before you go to see whether it might work for you.

• Save on extras. Adding child seats or a satnav to your car hire can really bump up the price. Consider taking your own car seat (or even buying one there), or installing a navigational app on your phone to cut your car rental costs.
