What is Jailbreaking?
Jailbreaking is the process of modifying your iPhone, iTouch or iPad to allow it to run and download unapproved extensions such as themes or applications. This process makes Apple's warranty on the device void, however it is still incredibly popular and many reports suggest that slightly under 1% of iPhone users have performed a jailbreak on their phone.
Is my Jailbroken iPhone still covered by my insurance policy?
We at moneymaxim have examined the terms and conditions of a variety of different iPhone insurers to answer this question. However, we must stress that each policy is individual and you should examine the terms and conditions of your insurance policy before purchasing to make sure it suits your personal needs. Generally, we have found that you are still covered for accidental damage claims on your policy for a Jailbroken iPhone as long as the process of Jailbreaking has not caused the damage.
A typical insurance policy exclusion reads as so:
"Damage resulting from alterations, maintenance including cleaning and restoring, repairs, faulty or defective design."
Suggesting that if you are claiming for a broken screen, it would only matter if the screen was broken whilst your were making the alterations to your software.
Policies covering you for the breakdown of your iPhone are more likely to question claims, as there maybe doubt as to whether the breakdown was caused by the Jailbreak.
Could you save money on your iPhone insurance policy?
Here at moneymaxim we compare some of the leading online iPhone insurance policies. Insurance policies advertised online tend to cost a fraction of that offered by high street retailers. We suggest you check our tables as if you purchased your policy from a phone retailer as an add on, the chances are you are paying substantially more than you need to.
